We Doff Our Hat

 

To Louis Braxton White

 

The first Negro Phi Beta Kappa scholar at the University of Iowa since the ‘80s Brother White went to Iowa in 1926 with the scholarship offered by Epsilon Lambda Chapter of St. Louis for the highest school senior of most promise. That same year he was a University delegate to the Milwaukee National Student Conference. His activities in the University Y.M.C.A have included membership on the cabinet, chairman of the devotional committee, and speaker on deputation teams. Various organizations on the campus have heard with pleasure his talks on various aspects of Negro life problems, and accomplishments. In February of 1929 he spoke at Presidents Hoover’s church in West Branch, IA. Brother White has led interracial conferences at Morning Sun, MacGregor, and Cedar Rapids, IA.; has broadcasted from the University radio station, WSUI’ was chief speaker at the State Student Volunteer Conference in April; is contributing writer to "Hawk Wings," Iowa literary magazine; has held the following offices: president, Cosmopolitan Club; present, Student Forum, secretary treasurer, International Relations Club; secretary, president and associate editor to THE SPHINX, Alpha Theta Chapter; State Director, Go-to-High-School, Go-To-College-Campaign, In 1930; member of University soccer team in 1927 and 1928 being the only Negro soccer player in the Big Ten during these years; native of St. Louis, Mo., where he lives at 4137 Enright Avenue; credits his mother as "the greatest inspiration to me." A thoroughly "swell guy."
